Ghana’s Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has inaugurated a nine-member committee to organise debates for presidential and vice-presidential candidates ahead of the 2024 general election.
The committee, chaired by former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, includes religious leaders, technocrats and a foreign national.
Members include the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Rev Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo, and the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference, Most Rev Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi.
The committee will select candidates, set debate formats and approve questions and moderators.
Presidential debates are scheduled for Accra and Kumasi in November, with the vice-presidential debate to be held in Accra.
The IEA also plans “evening encounters” in October, where candidates will answer questions from the public and media.
The initiative aims to provide a platform for candidates to present their policies and vision to the electorate.
Ghana’s 2024 general election is expected to be keenly contested, with the debates likely to play a significant role in shaping public opinion.
