Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team raced to victory at the 23rd African Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon by beating Nigeria in a time of 38.6 seconds.
The quartet of Fuseini Ibrahim, Isaac Botsio, Edwin Gadayi, and Abdul Rasheed Saminu outpaced their rivals to claim the gold medal, marking a triumphant return to the top of the podium after a 24-year drought in this event.
The Ghanaian sprinters clocked an impressive time of 38.6 seconds, leaving Nigeria to settle for silver with 38.84 seconds, while Ivory Coast secured the bronze with a time of 39.77 seconds. This victory was particularly sweet for Team Ghana, as it avenged their recent loss to Nigeria in the same event at the African Games held on home soil.
The last time Ghana tasted gold in the 4x100m relay at the African Championships was in 2000 in Algiers, when the legendary Abdul Aziz Zakari anchored the team to victory. This year’s win not only ends a long wait but also signals a resurgence in Ghana’s sprinting prowess.
This gold medal is Ghana’s second at the current championships following Rose Yeboah’s victory in high jump, underlining the country’s strong performance in Douala.
The victory has ignited hopes for future success in international competitions and could spark renewed interest in track and field among Ghanaian youth.
For now, Ibrahim, Botsio, Gadayi, and Saminu have etched their names in the annals of Ghanaian sports history, bringing pride to their nation and inspiration to aspiring athletes across the continent.
