The Ghana Healthcare Volunteers of Georgia (GHVOG), a team of US-based medical professionals, has completed a successful mission of providing free surgeries and consultations to over 260 patients at Atiwa Community Hospital in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The team, led by President Dr. Nicholas Fosu, conducted the five-day outreach program dubbed “Life-Changing Medical Mission Trip 2024” from 7-11 October at the hospital in Akyem Moseaso.
The team performed 42 surgeries, including gynecological procedures, cyst and lipoma removals, and treatments for fibroids, hysterectomies, endometriosis, hernia repairs, and hydroceles.
Dr. Fosu emphasized GHVOG’s commitment to giving back to underserved communities, citing teamwork, determination, and focus as key drivers of their success.
This marks GHVOG’s fourth medical mission to Ghana, aimed at improving healthcare access in rural communities.
The team enjoyed a warm welcome on arrival as traditional authorities (Nananom), local leaders, and hospital staff gathered at Akyem Moseaso to receive them.
The exercise was carried out with support from the local medical staff, ensuring the success of the US-based volunteers’ mission.
Dr. Thelma Asare, an obstetrician-gynecologist, shared her motivation for participating: “I want to give back to my community because here was where I was born, and it feels good to return to my land of birth.” She emphasized that regular checkups and early detection are crucial to treatment and recovery.
Principal surgeon Dr. Emile K. Tano praised the team’s adaptability, noting they continued procedures even during power outages. Surgical technician Mrs. Crystal Oladele commended the local medical team’s resourcefulness and expressed her commitment to returning for future missions.
GHVOG’s mission aligns with the government’s efforts to improve district and rural health outcomes. This trip demonstrated the organization’s unwavering commitment to promoting health through education and community outreach programs.
As GHVOG looks forward to its next trip, Dr. Fosu extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Nananom for their warm welcome, the hospital staff, and the GHVOG team for their dedication and support.
Ghana Healthcare Volunteers of Georgia’s work demonstrates the impact of professional volunteerism in healthcare delivery. Their efforts continue to inspire and motivate others to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
