Nigeria Legend, Jay Jay Okocha has urged football-loving fans of Nigeria not to expect too much from the current Super Eagles team.
The ex-Super Eagles captain believes that new coach Jose Peseiro is now rebuilding the team following the disappointments from the AFCON and the World Cup play-offs.
Nigeria was shown the exit at the round 16 stage at the delayed 2021 AFCON in Cameroon having impressed at the group stages by winning all three of their matches.
The Super Eagles also missed the 2022 World Cup ticket to rivals Ghana in a two-legged play-off in March.
The three-time African champions bounced back to winning ways last month, following their 2-1 victory against Sierra Leone and 10-0 mauling against Sao Tome and Principe in the opening fixtures of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
Despite a bright start to coach Peseiro’s record in competitive fixtures for the Super Eagles, the former Bolton Wanderers attacking midfielder insists the team
still has a lot to improve with a new manager in place.
“We have to accept our fate. We have a new manager in place, the former Borussia Dortmund star said as quoted by Sports Brief.
“It’s like a fresh start and maybe we have to reduce our expectations at the moment and accept where we are that we have a lot of work to do and encourage them to try and get us there.”
Okocha won 73 caps for Nigeria and scored 14 times between 1993 and 2006.
