The Russian government is set to revive the Russian-Arab Forum in a bid to foster stronger ties and enhance cooperation among the countries
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the country plans to hold a forum later this year, with hopes of organising the event in the enchanting Moroccan city of Marrakech in December.
The announcement comes after a meeting between Lavrov and Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, held in Moscow on Monday.
The Russian-Arab Forum, a platform that has been inactive for a number of years, aims to bring together leaders, policymakers, business representatives, and experts from both Russia and Arab nations. This revival signals Russia’s commitment to deepening political, economic, cultural, and social exchanges within the Arab world.
The forum, originally scheduled but cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, signals Russia’s renewed commitment to strengthen its ties with Arab nations and play a constructive role in addressing pressing regional issues.
Minister Lavrov emphasised that the forum would provide an opportunity for constructive dialogue and collaboration on pressing regional and global issues. With topics ranging from security and counterterrorism to trade and investment, this renewed platform aims to lay the groundwork for effective partnerships and promote shared interests.
During the joint press briefing following their meeting, Lavrov articulated his desire to collaborate with Arab nations to “stop the bloodshed” in the Israeli-Gaza conflict. His remarks underline the urgency of regional cooperation and Russia’s willingness to contribute to finding peaceful resolutions.
The Russian-Arab cooperation forum has historically served as a platform for dialogue and cooperation between Russia and Arab states. Topics of discussion at the forum often include political, economic, and cultural exchanges, as well as addressing pressing issues in the Middle East.
Russia’s decision to revive the forum comes at a crucial time when geopolitical dynamics are evolving rapidly and concerted efforts are needed to address common challenges. By reestablishing the Russian-Arab Forum, both Russia and Arab countries recognise the importance of multilateralism and a coordinated approach to confronting global issues.
With the forum scheduled to take place in picturesque Marrakech, participants will have the opportunity to experience Morocco’s rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, as the world-renowned Moroccan city would provide an ideal backdrop for fostering closer ties between Russia and Arab nations.
If the event proceeds as planned in December, the event will serve as a platform for fruitful discussions and the signing of agreements that will strengthen Russia’s involvement in the Arab region.
