Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Felix Tshisekedi on his re-election as President of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a statement, President Tinubu applauded the successful conduct of elections in the DRC, saying “It is welcoming that the last elections in DR Congo were well-concluded”.
President Tinubu went on to directly congratulate Tshisekedi, for his statemanship.
“I congratulate President Tshisekedi on his victory, ” said the statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale
“The President has demonstrated statesmanship in his handling of regional and continental matters.”
Tshisekedi won the DRC’s presidential election held on December 30, securing a second five-year term in office. The election was relatively peaceful and has been recognized as credible by international observers.
President Tinubu hailed the election as an example of African democracy in action, saying “Africa will overcome any challenge with governance by popular consent, and democracy will thrive.”
President Tinubu’s congratulations come as he himself recently won the Nigerian presidency in elections held in February. Tinubu has positioned himself as an advocate for democracy and progressive reforms in Nigeria during his presidential campaign.
Tshisekedi’s re-election is seen as an important milestone for the DRC, which suffered decades of dictatorship and civil war after independence.
