The Nigerian government, with immediate effect, has announced the suspension of accreditation of degree certificates obtained from institutions in Benin Republic and Togo.
In a statement on Monday, the Ministry of Education, stated that Government has lamented “some Nigerians deploy nefarious means and unconscionable methods to get a degree with the end objective of getting graduate job opportunities for which they are not qualified.”
He noted that in light of this, the government has directed all regulatory agencies and institutions involved with admissions and jobs to stop recognising degrees from these two countries until further notice.
The Government’s move follows an investigative report by Daily Nigerian Newspaper titled “How Daily Nigerian reporter bagged Cotonou varsity degree in 6 weeks”.
According to the minister, an inter-ministerial committee has been established to investigate the validity of certificates obtained from institutions in Benin Republic and Togo.
He said the suspension persists pending the outcome of an investigation involving the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education of Nigeria and the two countries as well as the Department of State Security Services and the National Youths Service Corps.

The committee will review admission processes and verify if graduates genuinely obtained their credentials. Accreditation will remain suspended until the investigation concludes.
