Nigerian discus thrower Obiageri Amaechi continues her remarkable 2024 season, smashing her personal best for the fourth time this year with a brilliant 63.17m throw to win the women’s discus at the Oklahoma Throws Series #11.
The “Disc Diva” unleashed her biggest throw yet to extend her reign atop the African continent, while It solidifying her position at No. 2 on Nigeria’s all-time list as she continues re-writing the record books.
The 25-year-old defending African Games champion eclipsed her own national record for the fourth time in 2024 alone with the 63.17m stellar effort.
Amaechi’s latest heroics came against a talented field in Norman, Oklahoma. The Nigerian queen outclassed American rival Julia Tunks, who got a personal best of 62.07m on the day but couldn’t match Amaechi’s top mark.
With each meet, Amaechi is distancing herself from the competition as she zeros in on the biggest prizes. Since her 58.93m gold at last year’s African Games, she has elevated her standards meet by meet, throw by throw.
Her compatriot Ashley Anumba also enjoyed a successful weekend, winning the women’s discus at the Meeting Cidade de Lisboa in Portugal with a season’s best throw of 58.88m.
As Amaechi continues dropping “bombs” in the discus circle, it’s becoming evident that her reign over the African discus scene is tightening. The Nigerian is well on her way to securing a lasting legacy as one of the greats.
