The 2023 CAF Awards held last night in Marakech, Morocco was a night for Nigerian football to shine brightest.
Not only did Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala claim the Women’s Player of the Year prize for a record sixth time, but Super Eagles hitman Victor Osimhen was announced as the Men’s Player of the Year.
Nigeria completely dominated the individual categories, with Oshoala and Osimhen named as the best female and male footballers in Africa. After already receiving her own award earlier in the ceremony, Oshoala’s joy was on full display when her countryman’s name was called for the men’s top honor.
In a video posted by CAF on their official Instagram page, Oshoala can be seen and heard erupting into passionate celebration as Osimhen’s award was announced. Throwing both arms straight into the air, a smiling Oshoala is caught screaming “Come on Victor, that’s my boy!” as the Napoli striker heads to the stage.
The outpouring of support from Oshoala underlines both the close camaraderie between Nigerian national team stars, and also the sheer dominance of the West African nation over African football in 2022.
With two such elite talents leading the way, hopes will be high that Nigeria can translate individual brilliance into team success at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
For now, though, Oshoala is clearly thrilled that her friend and fellow national icon Osimhen is receiving his own time in the spotlight. Judging by last night, the future remains bright for Nigerian football.
