Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye has expressed his gratitude to his “brother” Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, the President of the sister Republic of Mauritania, and the Mauritanian people for the warm welcome and attentive hospitality extended to him and his delegation during his recent one-day state visit to the neighboring country.
In his first foreign visit since assuming the presidency on April 2nd, Senegalese President Faye traveled to Mauritania, underscoring the importance of strengthening ties with neighboring nations.
Taking to social media after returning to Dakar, President Faye said, “Back in Dakar, I would like to express my thanks to my brother SEM @CheikhGhazouani, President of the sister Republic of Mauritania and to the Mauritanian people for their warm welcome and all the marks of attention that were reserved for me, as well as to my delegation.”
President Faye highlighted that their talks, marked by cordiality and broad convergences of views, reflect a strengthening of the historic ties of good neighborliness, fraternal friendship, and confident cooperation that unite the two countries.
Senegal and Mauritania share the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) liquefied natural gas field on their maritime border, jointly developed by British energy giant BP, the American company Kosmos Energy, the Mauritanian hydrocarbons company SMH, and the Senegalese state-owned Petrosen.
During the visit, President Faye was welcomed with full honors by his Mauritanian counterpart, President Mohamed Ahmed Ould Ghazouani, underscoring the close bilateral relations between the two nations.
The two leaders discussed various areas of mutual interest, including regional security, economic cooperation, and the strengthening of cultural ties.
The state visit is seen as a significant step in further cementing the longstanding bonds of friendship and cooperation between Senegal and Mauritania.
President Faye’s visit comes at a time the two neighbors are pinning their hopes for development, and to reaffirm their commitment to close cooperation in tackling economic challenges more effectively.
