South Africa’s Acting President, Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile, is set to attend the annual South African Police Service (SAPS) Commemoration Day on Sunday.
The event, to be held at the SAPS Memorial Site at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, will honour 39 police officers and reservists who lost their lives in the line of duty between April 2023 and March 2024.
Mr Mashatile, who is also the country’s Deputy President, will join the families of the fallen officers at the ceremony.
“This year’s event commemorates 39 members of the SAPS who have fallen in the line of duty in the 12 months between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024,” the government statement said.
The annual commemoration serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers in South Africa.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 local time, with media representatives requested to arrive an hour earlier.
The government has emphasised that no drones will be permitted during the programme.
