South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has praised Brazil’s preparations for the upcoming G20 Summit following discussions with his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The discussion between the two leaders comes at a crucial time as South Africa prepares to assume the presidency of the G20, the premier forum for international economic cooperation that brings together the world’s major economies, representing about two-thirds of the world’s population and 85% of global GDP.
“I had a good discussion today with His Excellency, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Federative Republic of Brazil, in which President Lula briefed me on the impressive preparations underway for Brazil to host the G20 Summit and related meetings two weeks from now,” Ramaphosa said in a statement.
The summit, marking a significant transition in G20 leadership, will see Brazil hand over the presidency to South Africa. “I look forward to attending this gathering where Brazil will pass the baton of the G20 Presidency to South Africa, having exercised its Presidency with great wisdom, efficiency and impact,” Ramaphosa noted.
Both leaders expressed their shared commitment to advancing the interests of developing nations. “President Lula and I share a strong commitment to championing the interests of the Global South and ensuring that all nations of the world benefit from equitable development,” Ramaphosa stated.
The G20 presidency handover to South Africa will mark a historic milestone as the country becomes the first African nation to lead the group since its formation. South Africa’s upcoming presidency is expected to focus on economic inequality, climate change, and sustainable development in the Global South.
