Morocco’s national athletics team was crowned champion of the 23rd edition of the Arab Athletics Championship for Adults, which concluded in Marrakech on Saturday.
The team got first place on the tournament’s medal tally with 56 medals in total. Moroccan athletes won 17 gold medals, 25 silver medals, and 14 bronze medals.
Egypt got second place with 20 medals in total: 10 gold medals, five silver medals, and five bronze medals.
Qatar, Tunisia, and Oman also ranked inside the top five.
Morocco clinched the top spot on the last day, winning 22 medals in total, including six gold medals.
M’Hammed Nouri, spokesperson for Morocco’s Royal Federation for Athletics (FRMA), told Morocco’s Press Agency MAP that the success is the result of a strategy that was outlined at the beginning of the year to develop Morocco’s athletics.
On the second day of the event, FRMA’s National Technical Director Abdellah Boukraa stated that Morocco’s results confirmed the country’s domination of the athletic discipline in the Arab world.
He added that the championship, along with the upcoming “Jeux de la Francophonie” in Kinshasa, are good preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Budapest in 2023, as well as the Paris 2024 Olympics.
