Two new achievements have been added to Morocco’s record of achievement list at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2023) in Japan, as Ayman Riad Solh bagged the bronze medal with 18 points while Hiba El Ferchioui won the Maryam Mirzakhani trophy with 13 points.
In total, the Moroccan math team scored 83 points with Ayman Riad Solh scoring 18 points, 17 points for Zakaria Dro, 15 points went to Yassir Abousir, 13 points were in favor of Hiba El Ferchioui, 12 points was scored by Yasser Sabi, and 8 points won by Ayman Hajifi.
The Moroccan team landed in Japan a couple of days ago to participate in the 64th edition of the IMO 2023 taking place between July 2-13.
It is noteworthy that Riad Solh is a first-year baccalaureate student who won a bronze medal at the International Olympiad in Informatics last year.
In 2021, Riad Solh was crowned champion in the fifth edition of the General Knowledge Championship organized every year by the Scientific High School in Rabat.
Two months ago, the Moroccan team made a name for themselves by excelling at the Pan-African Mathematical Olympiads (OPAM 2023) in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.
The olympiad, which was organized from May 13 to 22, saw El Ferchioui being crowned “Africa’s mathematics queen.”
The overall medals won at OPAM 2023 were two gold medals for Hiba Ferchioui and Ayman Hajifi, three silver in favor of Zakaria Dro, Yassir Abousir, and Zaineb Charqui, and one bronze for Maroua Zidouni.
Morocco’s performance at OPAM 2023 led the Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports to extend its congratulations to the Moroccan delegation as well as the mentors who had guided their preparation for this competition.
