Ajax Amsterdam manager Francesco Farioli has praised Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom for his “priceless” work, despite the player’s recent goal drought.
Akpom, 28, has not scored in Ajax’s last four league matches. The former Arsenal youth player was linked with a return to England before the season, but Farioli convinced him to stay for a second year.
Speaking before Ajax’s Europa League qualifier against Panathinaikos, Farioli highlighted Akpom’s contribution:
“Yes, everything comes together. The mentality, the spirit, the attention to detail,” the Italian manager stated.
“That also applies to Chuba; the work he does for the team is incredible. That is something that is not relevant to you (to a reporter), but for me it is priceless.”
Akpom made himself available for selection for the Nigerian national team after switching his international allegiance from England. He last featured for England’s U21 side in 2016,
Akpom joined Ajax for a reported €12m (£10.3m) after a stellar 2022/23 season with Middlesbrough, where he scored 28 league goals in 38 matches, nearly guiding the club back to the Premier League.
Despite a challenging start in Amsterdam, Akpom showed promise in his debut season, netting 15 goals and providing three assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.
Before the current season, Akpom admitted uncertainty about his future at the Johan Cruyff Arena. However, Farioli’s faith in the player seems to have been a crucial factor in his decision to stay.
The striker has four years remaining on his Ajax contract. While the club would consider offers, Farioli’s comments suggest Akpom remains an important part of his plans for now.
As the season progresses, Akpom will be looking to reward his manager’s faith by rediscovering his scoring touch. His work rate and contribution to the team’s defensive efforts, however, continue to earn him praise even during this goalless spell.
