Tournament debutants Mauritania caused a major upset by defeating reigning champions Senegal 5-2 in a stunning display at the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations in Hurghada, Egypt.
The newcomers showed no signs of nerves as they dominated their Group B opener against the four-time champions, who were heavily favoured to extend their record-breaking title haul.
Mauritania’s victory follows their impressive qualifying campaign, which included eliminating powerhouse Nigeria en route to their first-ever finals appearance.
The result puts Mauritania temporarily top of Group B, ahead of the day’s other match between Mozambique and Malawi.
The tournament continues on Monday with Group A fixtures, as Morocco face Ghana before hosts Egypt meet Tanzania.
The shock result raises questions about Senegal’s bid for a fifth continental crown while marking Mauritania as serious contenders despite their debutant status.
