Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) has announced the arrest of four ISIS-affiliated suspects for their alleged involvement in the preparation of terrorist operations aimed at undermining the country’s stability and security.
In a significant development in the fight against terrorism, (BCIJ) successfully apprehended four individuals suspected of having ties to the notorious terrorist group ISIS on Thursday.
These arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the continuous efforts by Moroccan authorities to combat extremism and maintain national security.
A statement from the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) said that the suspects, aged 25 to 32 were arrested in separate operations in different cities, including Tangier, Tetouan, and Inzegane Ait Melloul.
It said the Security services seized several equipment during the arrest including bladed weapons, documents promoting ISIS ideology, and a manuscript related to methods to join ISIS camps in the Sahel.
Police also seized a series of photos documenting terrorist attacks carried out by ISIS.
Preliminary investigation data showed that the suspects pledged allegiance to the self-proclaimed Emir of ISIS.
They were planning to carry out terrorist attacks targeting vital facilities and security institutions.
The suspects also received training in mountainous and forested areas as part of preparation to execute said operations, the statement added.
The investigation also uncovered information on one of the suspects who attempted to join ISIS in the Sahel before abandoning his plan to take part in terrorist acts targeting Morocco.
Police put the suspects in custody for further investigations to uncover more details and to identify all potential accomplices or possible links and connections the suspects may have with terrorist organizations.
The arrest is part of Morocco’s counterterrorism approach to fight against security threats locally and regionally.
The DGST concluded its statement stressing that the operation reflects the increasing threats posed by ISIS and other terrorist organizations worldwide, especially with the recurring incitement calls made by terror groups.
The BCIJ’s dedication and expertise have played a crucial role in dismantling terrorist cells operating within the country, ensuring citizens’ safety and maintaining stability.
It is worth noting that Morocco has been actively engaged in international efforts to combat terrorism and extremism. The country’s proactive approach in sharing intelligence, conducting joint operations, and implementing preventive measures has garnered praise from the international community.
The recent arrests reiterate Morocco’s determination to eradicate the influence of terrorist organizations and safeguard its citizens from the horrors of extremism. The swift action taken by the BCIJ demonstrates the effectiveness of Morocco’s security apparatus in identifying and apprehending individuals involved in extremist activities.
